| Question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Did you pay at least one contribution before the semester of disability? | Check your posted SSS contributions before the semester when the disability occurred. | SSS lists at least one paid contribution before the semester of contingency as the basic qualifying condition. |
| Do you have at least 36 monthly contributions before the semester of disability? | Count posted monthly contributions before that semester. | The 36-month threshold is the main monthly-pension versus lump-sum gate. |
| Is the disability permanent partial or permanent total? | Match the medical condition to SSS evaluation, not only to your own description. | SSS decides the assessed disability type, degree and documents needed. |
Start with these checks before estimating an amount. A person can be medically disabled and still need SSS to verify the contribution record, disability type and supporting records before a claim is approved.
Monthly pension or lump sum
SSS pays the disability benefit either as a monthly pension or a lump sum. The monthly pension applies to a disabled member with at least 36 monthly contributions before the semester of disability. A member who has not met that 36-month threshold receives a lump-sum benefit if the claim qualifies.
A permanent partial disability can also be paid in lump sum when the assessed benefit duration is less than 12 months. Do not assume that every approved disability claim produces a lifetime monthly pension.
Example: why the 36-month gate matters
Two members with the same assessed disability but different contribution records
Assume SSS assesses both claims as qualifying ordinary disability claims. Member A has 42 posted monthly contributions before the semester of disability. Member B has 24 posted monthly contributions before that semester.
- Member A
- Monthly-pension gate met, subject to SSS computation and assessment.
- Member B
- 36-month gate not met, so the claim moves to lump-sum treatment if approved.
This example does not estimate the peso amount. SSS bases the actual amount on the contribution record, monthly salary credit, years of membership and disability assessment. The safest first task is to download or screenshot your contribution history and bring it to the claim review.
Prepare the claim records before filing
The document list changes with the disability type, and some conditions have a waiting period. SSS lists a fracture or stroke claim as filed four months after the injury, operation or onset, and a minimal PTB or diabetes claim two years after onset.
- Disability Claim Application form when SSS requires it for the filing method.
- SSS Medical Certificate form accomplished by the attending physician within six months before the claim is filed.
- Certified true copies of medical records, such as hospital abstract, discharge summary, operation record, consultation record or diagnostic results that fit the disability type.
- Valid ID and disbursement-account details through the SSS process.
- Any additional medical records requested by the SSS Medical Specialist.
Check the contribution line on your payslip
SSS contributions for employees are based on monthly salary credit. SSS states that from 1 January 2025 the contribution is 15% of the MSC, up to PHP 35,000: 10% from the employer and 5% from the employee, with EC paid only by the employer. Contributions on the MSC portion above PHP 20,000 go to the member’s MySSS Pension Booster account under the Mandatory Provident Fund.
A payslip deduction does not by itself prove that the contribution was posted. Check the SSS member portal contribution history and compare the posted month, salary credit and employer record. Late, missing or incorrectly posted contributions can affect benefit eligibility and computation.
Where and when to file
SSS says a disability benefit application must be filed at any SSS branch within 10 years from the occurrence of disability. The SSS Medical Specialist can require further verification, physical examination or additional medical records.
Before visiting a branch, prepare photocopies, medical records and contact details. Keep copies of the submitted packet and any claim reference number so follow-ups are specific.
