Which loan to use

For a small amount you will repay within two years, start with SSS. Its 8% a year is the lowest rate among the loans open all year (the calamity loans below are cheaper but open only after a declaration), and the loan is sized to your salary credit rather than your savings. If you have fewer than 36 posted contributions, or you need more than SSS will lend, the Pag-IBIG MPL lends against what you have saved and lets you stretch payments to 36 months.

For a home, the Pag-IBIG housing loan is the only one here built for it. The choice that moves your payment most is the repricing period: the rate is fixed only for the years you pick, then reset. The housing loan calculator shows the payment and the income you need under each.

Before taking any of these, check that your contributions are posted. The SSS contribution table 2026 shows what your SSS contribution buys in salary credit, and the Pag-IBIG contribution table 2026 what goes into your Pag-IBIG savings.

Next: Run your own amount in the SSS salary loan calculator; if SSS will not lend enough, size the Pag-IBIG MPL next.

Emergency and calamity loans

These open only after a declaration, so check the agency's announcement before you apply. As of August 14, 2026, SSS said its Emergency Loan Program, in effect since May 1, 2026, remains available to qualified members nationwide, including those affected by Tropical Storm Maymay and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). SSS advisory, August 14, 2026

  • SSS Emergency Loan: up to ₱20,000 at 7%, no service fee, 6 months before the first payment. Needs 18 contributions.
  • SSS Calamity Loan: up to ₱20,000 at 7%, opened for named areas for 30 days from SSS's announcement. Not available while you hold an Emergency Loan.
  • Pag-IBIG Calamity Loan: up to 90% of your savings at 5.95%, within 90 days of the State of Calamity declaration for your area. It can sit beside an MPL, but together they cannot pass 90% of your savings.

Government employees

Government employees are GSIS members under Republic Act No. 8291, Sec. 3, so their salary and emergency loans come from GSIS, not SSS. Its programs and terms are on gsis.gov.ph.

MP2 is savings, not a loan

MP2 is Pag-IBIG's voluntary 5-year savings account. It paid 7.12% for 2025, tax-free, and the rate is declared each year from Pag-IBIG Fund's income. The MP2 calculator lets you test any past year's rate against monthly or one-time savings, and Time deposit vs MP2 after the 20% final tax compares what you keep against a bank deposit, whose interest is taxed.

Questions

Is it better to loan in Pag-IBIG or SSS?

For a cash loan, SSS is cheaper if you have 36 posted contributions: 8% a year against about 17.5% for the Pag-IBIG MPL. Pag-IBIG lends against your savings and can lend more, and its Calamity Loan at 5.95% is the cheapest when your area is declared under a State of Calamity.

Can I loan ₱300,000 in Pag-IBIG?

As a cash loan only if your Pag-IBIG savings are large enough: the MPL lends up to 90% of them, so ₱300,000 needs about ₱333,334 in savings. A housing loan goes up to ₱10M, limited by your income and the property's value.

Can I have an SSS salary loan and a Pag-IBIG MPL at the same time?

Yes. They are separate agencies with separate loan programs. Each checks only its own records: SSS requires no past-due SSS loan, and Pag-IBIG requires that any existing Pag-IBIG short-term loan is not in default.

How do I check my SSS or Pag-IBIG loan status?

SSS loans are tracked in your My.SSS account or the MySSS app. Pag-IBIG short-term loans can be followed on the Virtual Pag-IBIG Loan Status Verification page.

What happens if I stop paying a government loan?

SSS: The full balance becomes due without demand or notice. SSS deducts any unpaid balance, with interest and penalties, from whatever SSS benefit is due to you or your beneficiaries, including retirement, disability and death benefits. Pag-IBIG MPL: The outstanding loan becomes due and demandable, and without demand Pag-IBIG Fund offsets it from your Total Accumulated Value, the savings the loan was based on.
