Reading a cash back rate

Banks pay a higher rate on a few categories, such as groceries, fuel or dining, and a lower rate on everything else. Many cap the cash back per month or per year. The table quotes the earn rate and the cap as the bank states them, so check both against where you spend.

Cash back only pays off if you clear the balance. At 3% a month, the interest on a ₱20,000 balance carried for one month is ₱600, which is what a 1% card returns on ₱60,000 of spending.

Questions

Which credit card gives the best cash back in the Philippines?

Start with the lowest yearly fee among cards anyone can apply for: PNB-The Travel Club Platinum Mastercard (PNB), Security Bank Wave Mastercard (Security Bank), RCBC Landmark Anson's Mastercard (RCBC). Then pick the one whose bonus categories match where you spend most. A card with a higher fee only wins if its extra cash back on your own spending is larger than the fee difference.

Which credit card gives cash back on fuel?

Petron BPI Card (BPI), Toyota Mastercard (Metrobank), UnionBank Shell Power Visa Gold (UnionBank), Toyota Platinum Mastercard (Metrobank), UnionBank Shell Power Visa Platinum (UnionBank), China Bank Platinum Mastercard (China Bank), EastWest Visa Platinum (EastWest), HSBC Live+ Credit Card (HSBC), China Bank World Mastercard (China Bank). Each card page quotes the rate and the yearly cap.

Can I deduct credit card fees and interest from my taxes?

Not against a salary: Section 34 of the Tax Code allows no deductions against compensation income. A self-employed person who elects the 40% optional standard deduction takes it in place of itemized expenses, so card charges do not reduce tax there either.

Scope: Cards that only rebate interest charges, or that let you redeem points as cash, are not counted as cash back here.
