Count the qualifying hours first
Draw the shift on a timeline and mark 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Then mark meal breaks and any hours outside the shift. Only qualifying worked hours belong in the night-differential count.
For example, an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. shift spans seven hours inside the night window. If an unpaid one-hour meal break falls entirely inside that window, six worked hours remain in this example. A break at a different time changes the count.
Example: the additional night-pay amount
Assume ₱100 per hour and six qualifying ordinary-day hours
The 10% differential adds ₱10 for each qualifying hour. The calculation below is only the additional night pay.
₱100 × 0.10 × 6 = ₱60 additional night pay
Those same six hours have ₱600 in ordinary basic wages. Together they produce ₱660 before other applicable adjustments. If a payslip already includes basic wages elsewhere, add the ₱60 differential rather than another ₱660.
What if night work is also overtime?
Apply the night premium to the applicable overtime or day rate. For an ordinary-day overtime hour at a ₱100 basic hourly wage, the total is ₱100 × 1.25 × 1.10 = ₱137.50. The night component of that hour is ₱12.50.
A holiday or rest-day rate changes the starting amount. Keep separate lines for ordinary night hours and overtime night hours. This makes the computation reproducible when someone checks it against the schedule.
Check coverage and your agreed rate
Exclusions include qualifying managerial employees, field personnel and retail or service establishments regularly employing no more than five workers. Confirm the applicable definition before treating a job title or small office size as proof of exclusion.
Some employers promise a higher night premium. If your contract says 15%, ask payroll to show how it applied that promise to the qualifying hours. Do not replace a better agreed rate with the statutory minimum when estimating your own pay.
How to query a missing differential
Keep the comparison to one pay period first. Once the method is agreed, use the same method to review earlier periods.
- List the dates and start/end times of the affected shifts.
- Identify meal-break times and overtime separately.
- Show the qualifying night hours and the rate used in your calculation.
- Attach the payslip and ask payroll which hours or rule differ from your record.
